En 2001, Brandon Flowers est abandonné par son premier groupe, Blush Response, après son refus de suivre le reste de l'équipe à Los Angeles. Après son départ, Flowers découvre une annonce dans le Las Vegas Weekly émanant du futur guitariste David Keuning, qui propose de former un groupe dont les influences seraient Oasis, The Cure, New Order, ou The Smiths. Les deux hommes se rencontrent, s'entendent rapidement et décident de trouver un batteur et un bassiste pour compléter la formation. Après de nombreuses auditions, Ronnie Vannucci et Mark Stoermer sont sélectionnés pour remplir ces rôles. Le groupe tire son nom d'une nouvelle de l'écrivain américain Ernest Hemingway, The Killers, ce nom apparaissant en outre sur la batterie d'un groupe fictif mis en scène dans un clip de New Order (Crystal).

Avant de faire partie du groupe, les quatre musiciens exerçaient des professions assez variées : Flowers, ayant quitté le lycée, a été groom au Gold Coast Hotel. David Keunig, originaire de Pella, dans l'Iowa a suivi des cours au lycée de Kirkwood et à l'université de l'Iowa. Il a ensuite déménagé à Las Vegas en janvier 2000 pour travailler dans une boutique de vêtements Banana Republic. Max Stoermer était quant à lui coursier dans le domaine médical et étudiant en philosophie à l'Université du Nevada. Enfin, Ronnie Vannucci était étudiant en percussions classiques et photographe.

Le groupe joue pour la première fois dans le club gay de Las Vegas Tramps. C'est en Grande-Bretagne que le groupe commence à accroître sa notoriété, notamment dans les pages du magazine New Musical Express. La sortie de leur premier album Hot Fuss le 7 juin 2004, chez Lizard King Records, puis aux États-Unis le 15 juin de la même année chez Island Records leur permet d'accéder au succès. Fin 2004, leur album sort au Japon et en France, ainsi que leur premier single, Somebody told me, suivi par Mr. Brightside et All These Things That I've Done.

Le deuxième album du groupe Sam's Town, est sorti le 3 octobre 2006. Cet album n'a pas été autant plébiscité par la critique mais les ventes ont été très élevées. Le premier single "When You Were Young" connait un grand succès, et il est suivi de "Bones", dont le clip a été dirigé par Tim Burton. Le troisième single est la ballade synth-rock "Read My Mind" suivi de "For Reasons Unknown".

Ils sortent fin 2007 leur troisième disque, un LP intitulé Sawdust regroupant les faces B et des inédits du groupes. Le seul single extrait est Tranquilize en duo avec Lou Reed.

Brandon was born Las Vegas, but when he was 8 years, his family moved in a small city of Utah, Nephi.It's thanks to his big Brother,Shane that his musical tastes continue. He makes him discover bands such as The Smiths or The Cars and brings it to his first concert, that of Morrissey who became a model for Brandon.He is quickly discovered a passion for the golf, but wearied by the life in a small city, he begs his parents at the 16 years age to let it set out again in Las Vegas to live in an aunt. It's here that he found the vocation to become a rock'n'roll star.He integrates a first band based on synthiseur : Blush Response.Brandon is left fallen by this group when it refuses to move in Los Angeles with them.After having seen Oasis in concert with Hard rock Hotel, he understands the importance of the guitar in a band and decides to integrate a new band.He finds then on an advertisement left by Dave Keuning...It is the beginning of a great adventure...

Brandon est né à Las Vegas, mais à l'âge de 8 ans, sa famille a déménagé dans une petite ville de l'Utah, Nephi. C'est en grande partie grâce à son grand frère, Shane que ses gouts musicaux s'affirment. Il lui fait découvrir des groupes tels que The Smiths ou The Cars et l'amène à son premier concert, celui de Morrissey qui est devenu un modèle pour Brandon. Il se découvre rapidement une passion pour le golf, mais lassé par la vie dans une petite ville, il supplie ses parents à l'age de 16 ans de le laisser repartir à Las Vegas pour vivre chez une tante. C'est là bas qu'il se trouve la vocation de devenir une rock star. Il intègre un premier groupe basé sur le synthé : Blush Response. Brandon est laissé tombé par ce groupe lorsqu'il refuse de déménager à Los Angeles avec eux. Après avoir vu Oasis en concert au Hard Rock Hotel, il comprend l'importance de la guitare dans un groupe et décide d'intégrer un nouveau groupe. Il tombe alors sur une annonce laissée par un certain Dave Keuning...c'est le début d'une grande aventure ...

Il a fait parti d'un groupe lorsqu'il était au lycée appelé "Pickle".


Dave Is the own member to be not in Las Vegas. He was born in Iowa,in Pella.
Teenager,he listens many bands like Aerosmith,U2.Then he integrates a group of Jazz in his college.Between 1993 and 1997, he also plays of the guitar in an rock band called Pickle.

Dave est le seul membre à ne pas être originaire de Las Vegas. Il est né dans L'Iowa, à Pella. Adolescent, il écoute des groupes comme Aerosmith, U2. Il intègre alors un groupe de Jazz dans son lycée. Entre 1993 et 1997, il joue également de la guitare dans un groupe de rock appelé "Pickle". Il rentre ensuite à l'université de l'Iowa avant d'abandonner et de partir pour Las Vegas en 2000. Il travaille là bas dans un magasin de vêtement "Banana Republic" tout en cherchant à former un groupe par le biais de petites annonces dans le journal. Il se présente en tant que guitariste, avec le nom de scène "Travian Go" qu'il abandonne ensuite rapidement. Parmis les influences musicales qu'il cite on retrouvait notamment The Beatles, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure. En citant ce dernier groupe, il se trouve confronté à de nombreuses personnes fortement gothiques donc décide d'arrêter de citer ce groupe. Il rajoute Oasis dans ses influences et c'est alors que Brandon Flowers répond à son annonce...
